PCUP Chair Ridon lauds proposal for state workers’ pay hike

Quezon City, Oct. 6, 2016 – “As the people in the frontline of the administration’s war against poverty, we owe government employees anything that will help ease their daily struggles to make ends meet. This is a timely proposal by Senator Drilon” This was the reaction of Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) Chairman Terry Ridon on Senator Franklin Drilon’s call yesterday for an additional P3,000 allowance for the 1.3 million civilian employees of the government.

The proposal was made in reaction to President Duterte’s issuance of an Executive Order mandating an increase of Armed Forces and PNP personnel ‘combat pay’ to P3,000 per month.

“Equally important is the role played by civilian state workers, including our own in the PCUP, as partners of the Duterte administration for change” said Ridon.

He highlighted the essential of PCUP workers in delivering services to members of the urban poor, particularly informal settlers, such as:

- Coordinating efforts of various government agencies concerned with resettlement sites for informal settlers to ensure the former’s livability

- Advocating the President’s “no demolition without relocation” policy among local government units and national government agencies connected to either housing or development projects which displace people

- Provision of certain basic services for resettlement site residents

- Research and formulation of new government policies and programs regarding the urban poor, and amendments to legislation regarding the same

“We will be remiss in our obligation to our public servants if they who are doing so much in the fight against poverty are themselves struggling against it” Ridon concluded.

The Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP), under the Office of the President, is mandated to “serve as the direct link of the urban poor to the government in policy formulation and program implementation addressed to their needs”, as per Executive Order 82 series of 1986.
